Here is one success story. We started growing this 'green' that grows on a fine that is indigenous to the island and it grows like a vine. We can't put up enough stakes for it as it winds around the wooden poles and around itself. It make a great salad and it is not tart but very green. As soon as a find the name of it I will post it here. If I dig up more of our small yard, I'm definitely planting more of this mysterious vine. I also take a pic of it so you all can see what I mean or someone might recognize it.

Hi I've had my garden for the last 4mth in Trinidad. It is tough to grow vegetables in the rainy season with flooding here. We have tried many methods to retain our topsoil from 'running off'. So far composting all our vegetable matter and scraps (we are vegetarian) mixing it with soil has helped. However we have to watch our garden like hawks as the plants either get too much water, sun, or parasites. We are eating lettuce, stringbeans and patchoi out of it now but not enough to sustain the family. We realize to reach that goal, we are going to have to work harder to understand what we can grow here successfully. Cauliflower and broccoli have been a problem

Keidi Awadu Leads a Community Workshop on Backyard Gardening
Presenting for the Watts Community Festival, we went through a broad set of inspiring discussions regarding self-sufficiency, organic gardening, nutrition, collective economics and community development.

The forum was very well received and there were a number of converts. To say the least, I had a great time showing off my extensive photo gallery of this year's George Washing Carver Organic Gardening Project.

What can we do to inspire a dozen more of us to plant our fall crops right now?

It is already fall planting season in many parts of the country. Here in the high desert surrounding Los Angeles, daytime temperatures are finally below 95 degrees after averaging 100 per day for about 2 months.
I have begun replanting my raised beds as well as seed starter kits. I have planted various types of lettuce, radishes, swiss chard, bok choy, basil, beans, and other cool weather crops.

At this time of year (California has 3 seasons) you can plant your root crops (carrots, beets, turnips), cruciferous veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts), leafy greens (chard, spinach, collards, lettuces) and many different herbs.

Now is the time to begin anew. Now is NOT the time to remain complacent and just conduct our business with the corporations as usual. We don't know what all lies ahead but we do know that there is a struggle for us to be independent, health and self-sufficient.
