greetings everyone we are very excited to be here amongst you all with the same mindness, to support and bring forth our youth to the forefront of their lifes experiences giving them direction with the assistance of the elders of the village.

join us today as we celebrate

FATHERHOOD:ALLOW ME TO REINTRODUCE MYSELF!

Dads are, if you will, in the infancy of their revolution to re-enter the family, this time not only as money raisers, but also as child raisers. Not to out-do mom, but to do with mom. In fact, it is improbable that mothers will make much more progress in the workplace without dads sharing more responsibilities in the homeplace. This is a post by JC Callaway from another site, but relevant here.

The Rites of Passage could coincide with the natural, and structured, development of the youth. As the youth goes through the growing stages, ages 4-7, much observation could be done in identifying youths' innate talents as they engage in various activities. Codes of Conduct are established and are understood and practiced by the youth(s). Virtues such as, respect, honesty, patiences, and collective cooperation, are instilled regularly during this period of growth and development. Work Ethics are also taught, so the youth will naturally become accustom to being responsible and contributing to the family/group. At age 7, a series of test ~so to speak ~ are giving to the youth so they may demonstrate fully their mastership in understanding the mentioned above. Upon passing, they have completed the Rites of Passage at this stage.
Ages 8-12, reaffirms and duplicates what the youth learned during ages 4-7, and are expected to understand what is expected of them in terms of their behavior and responsibilities. Emphasis is placed on the youth becoming refined in the mentioned areas. Although the youth will engage, and is introduced to a number of subjects and activities, the youth's inclination toward a particular subject should be understood, emphasized and developed. For example, if the youth is good at a particular sport, but indicates a natural understanding of math, then emphasis should be placed of the youth's mathematical cognizance.[I have seen too many times parents placing emphasis on a youth's athletic skills, while overlooking the youth's strong affinity toward a particular subject.] The Rites of Passage are performed once again at age 12. Ages 13-17 consist of the same method, but allowing youth to perform independently, with emphasis on performing tasks and developing and producing outcomes for particular assigned projects. Here the youths' horizon are expanded, as youth learns more about the community and the world at-large. Youth is expect to be self-determined in working toward constructive goals, objectives and missions. Once again, youth innate talents are fully refined. The Rite of Passage is determined by the considerations established by the African American Congress.
This concludes my humble suggestions for the Rite of Passage.

Peace Sis Asha,
First and foremost, I applaude you for taking the lead to moderate this group! If we do not save our young (a.k.a., our future), our communities fate is doomed forever! I am developing a curriculum for an Afrikan Centered Youth Empowerment Camp. We need to instill a sense of entrepreneurship in our youth. A desire to build their own! We sit by and watch youth from other cultures create businesses and develop products and services each day. We must realize that this is being done with the assistance of the adults in their communities. It is our responsibility to teach our young that they came from "Independent" communities. Not just in our motherland but also here in Amerika. We need to talk to them about our former "Black Wall Streets". Next we need to help them develop viable products and services to offer our community members. Once developed we need to mentor them step by step on how to be socially accountable as a business owner. Then as a community we have to support their endeavors. We know that our youth are creative geniuses that have an innate affinity towards entrepreneurship. However, it has been mis-directed toward negative hip-hop music, drugs, and other activities which are detrimental to our people. Please contact me directly, as I would like to get your input on the curriculum and activities for my camp.

Sis. Akosua just jposted this on my page and I thought it important enough to post on your site. Hope you find it useful in terms of what is possible in developing programs for our youth.

Peace, and Asante to Sis. Akosua

Peace Baba Kabaila,

There are several different models of Rites of Passage Programs that I am aware of....however, I would suggest you contact Baba Mwalimu Baruti or Baba Wekesa Madzimoya. Both are here on LIB and both are Jegnas for the Rites of Passage that my son came through. Several brothers; Baba Kweku Opare, Baba Densu, Baba Ayietoro of Afrikan Djeli Cultural Center, Baba Kofi, Baba Yohance cultivated two groups within the last four years. These youth have a pretty comprehensive journey where they learn to speak an Afrikan language, learn to farm, martial arts, and are held accountable to the community at large. Mama Marimba is also one of the elders that supervises the female Rights of Passage Program in which the females go through the same extensive program.

Also, St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, MD have an institutionalized/academic/formal Rites of Passage as part of their curriculum. It is the oldest black private school in the U.S. founded by Haitian Nuns. Their program is called "Boys to Men" and is taught by Kennedy Hudddleston. He's been doing Rites of Passage their for over twelve years. He's been very effective in his program. A school that Camille Cosby just donated some millions of dollars too.... Morgan State University has a program where they teach those who are interested in hosting Rites of Passage Programs...Will Smith & Jada Pinkett just funded their program.

The unique features I found with the Atlanta based Rites of Program is the fact that :

1.) The community at large is involved with the process and

2.) The Rites of Passage Programs are largely reinforced through the activities of AFrican Centered Schools based in Atlanta. They include: Ankoben, Nsoromma School, Pearl Academy of Agriculture & Environment Center, Children of the Most High, Kilombo, AYA, Nyame Nti.

The question I beg u to ask is this:

What is the criteria of an effective Rites of Passage Program???

How do you check the transformation?

How do Rites of Passage Programs reinvent themselves to adjust and address todays issues?

What are the components of a Rites of Passage Program and who should be involved?

Peace

One of the things that I would like to see discussed in this group are the various concepts of Rites of Passage programs and how they can be implemented thru a national unity structure, such as the National African American Congress. Am looking for models and paradigms that we can dissemenate to those interested.
