AS AN ACT OF SELF-DETERMINATION, SHOULD WE BEGIN RENAMING CITIES AND TOWNS WHERE WE ARE PREDOMINATE?

i AM ENCOURAGED TO SEE MANY OF OUR COMRADES FROM CHICAGO WHO RENAME THEIR CITY, DUSABLE CITY. WHAT ABOUT OTHER CITIES AND AREAS? LET'S START WITH DETROIT AND NEW ARK!!!! I THINK IT WOULD HAVE A POSITIVE EFFECT ON OUR CHILDREN BY INSTILLING A SENSE OF PRIDE, RATHER THAN ONE OF LIVING IN AN OCCUPIED ZONE. sEE MY BLOG ON HOW WE FREE OURSELVES IN LIBERATED ZONES.

i think its a good idea particularly for the psychological effect that it can have. i was born and raised in the Caribbean - Antigua - and we (the "natives" lol) have always called the island by its original name (i.e. the name the Arawaks called the island before ya boy chris got lost on his way to India). so just about every Antiguan knows that Wadadli is the original name for the island and we use it in general conversation.

i first heard of Afrikans in america renaming their cities on LIBradio and found it really interesting....esp since I wasn't familiar with some of the names and of course that lead me to do some research. so not only would it be good from the point of instilling pride but also from an educational point as well.

I've heard Awadu call D.C. "Banneker City" and I was thinking, "Damn, he's right" so I've started that. I wouldn't know who else I could do that to. Detroit could be "Black Bottom" but the anglos are moving in while moving us out.

hotep bro
there were a few native american groups in the caribbean...the 3 i'm familiar with are the Siboneys, Arawaks and Caribs. the Siboneys lived in the leeward islands (e.g Antigua, St. Kitts, Montserrat, Anguilla...) hundreds of years before the Arawaks and Caribs. not much is known about them other than the fact that they were peaceful people. didn't bother nobody and just lived a simple life. after them were the Arawaks who occupied just about all (if not all) the islands at some point. they were also peaceful people, not very war-like. its said that their migration up the chain of islands was in response to the more war like Caribs who migrated through the region after them (so when the Caribs would come on the scene they would raid the Arawaks, rough them up at bit and the Arawaks would flee to the next island up the chain and rebuild their lives from there...the Caribs would eventually follow and the process continued like that). when "forever lost" columbus got to the caribbean he encountered the Tainos. now i'm not sure whether the Tainos and Arawaks are the same "tribe" (as I've heard other people say this). to the best of my knowledge they were another "tribe" but I could be wrong. in any case columbus the barbarian didn't waste much time wiping them out. what tickles me is that on his 2nd (i think) voyage back to the c'bean he left approx 100 of his men on what later became Antigua to basically do as they did in what became the Bahamas and Santo Domingo (i.e. enslave, torture, murder, brutalize...commit genocide basically...they called it setting up a colong). well what ya boy didn't know was that the native americans living in Antigua at the time were the Caribs....not the peace loving Arawaks. well let's just say they never quite recovered from the "welcome" party the Caribs threw for them....when columbus returned to the island a few months later to see how his colony was doing not one european was alive! it must have sent the right message because no european nation tried to colonize Antigua for a little over 100 years after that. gotta love the Caribs!
there are still Caribs living today (although quite a few are mixed with Afrikan or eurpoean) mostly on Dominica, St Lucia, St Vincent (possibly other islands but those are the ones I know for sure). As far as I know the Arawaks were totally wiped out (IF the Arawaks = Tainos however they still exist at least in Puerto Rico...and they are mostly mixed as well).
hope that helps brother.

Growing up in Chicago a couple of friends and I used to always call it DuSable City. I think that this is an excellent idea.

Great Choices Keidi. How would all of you suggest we go about selecting names we can go with, while respecting the diversity of our community. My feeling is that we should use cultural, historical and spiritual/religious criteria in our selection.
I think this also raises the issue of developing African communities in areas where land remains cheap and we can build up our own infra-structure to suite our needs and purposes. Just thinkin out loud.
