Living In Black

Bringing You 360 Degrees of the Black Experience

I am 34 years old. I struggle daily with my eating habits, health, energy level, etc..

I am currently trying to break free of this cycle I am in, but I find myself practically zombie like during work, tired when trying to raise a 10,9,2,1 year old when I begin to break away from those staples of the american diet. (caffiene, high fructose corn syrup, etc..)

I have been trying to "transition" to a vegan/vegetarian type lifestyle with very little success. I am trying to do so with my children as well and I face a situation, where I'm not getting any help from mom, with diet and so forth.

Open to suggestions for myself AND for my kids.

How do I get through my work dayand home day without feeling like I'm going to pass out or needing to sleep for 3 hours in the middle of the day?

I am completely open to suggestions ideas, strategies, tips, whatever.

Bro. Jason,

I too fight this very monster. I have a horrible sweet tooth and have been fighting a sugar addiction for years. I have recently began eating fresh fruit with a little honey to satisfy that. If you get your kids involved in a sport like boxing or something physical, their handler's suggestions may resonate louder than yours. Getting them to help you prepare the food may make them want to go home and show their mother what they learned. Just some suggestions.

Thanks bro. Jason. I appreciate the idea.

Things have stableized a bit. I eat tons of fruit and salads, ALL DAY....haha

I'm looking for recipies and I've been drinking water like it's going outta style....

Peace and Love Beautiful One,

You need to do an internal body cleanse www.drnatura.com to clean out waste that is still lingering trying to sap your energy. And you need to start doing green juices, parsley juice in particular is like giving yourself a healthy blood transfusion, and is very energizing. Kale, Cucumber and Celery are also really good for energy. You can make the Parsley juice in a blender and strain the fiber off, or PLEEASE, get a JUICER! You really need a juicer. I would also suggest you start taking some Spirulina (a green food in powder form) that you drink with orange or apple juice. Having about 3 glasses of spirulina a day will definitely boost your energy up also. Also, you don't want to overdo the carbs/starches (rice, pasta, bread, potatoes) and turn into a STARCHETARIAN as these are good natural energy boosters, but they have an acid effect on your body chemistry, put a strain on your pancreas when overindulged in, can pre-dispose you diabetes, and can sap your energy over time.

I would recommend that you also eat more salad based meals, meaning not just salad, but whatever your meal is make certain it is served over a bed of fresh (non-iceburg...that's a no-no) dark green leafy lettuces such red leaf, green leaf, spinach, romaine. This will ensure that you are getting lots of live enzymes to help keep you energzied.

Cooked food saps your energy every time, so add more living foods to your meals, fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, garlic, cilantro, sprouts, etc..

Also, keep fresh fruit with you...at home, at work, in your gym bag (away from sweaty socks), but you get what i mean, don't give yourself an excuse to indulge in the junk machines, keep fruits and nuts with you as much as possible. Its instant energy.

If after cleansing, juicing and eating more live, you still continue to feel tired, something else might be going on in your environment to cause the fatigue you're feeling and I would recommend that you get into a habit of doing a breathing exercise called the breath of fire. It is a rapid paced breathing that you do totally in and out of the nostrils. In and out, in and out as vigorously as you can for as long as you can. 3-10 minutes should do you good. This is something that you can do with your young ones to help them as well with mental clarity and alertness, but not at bed time.

If you haven't discovered already, Boca (check their website) has a great vegan veggie burger and also make veggie crumbles which you can make things like tacos, chili, spaghetti, etc (things that children usually like). Also you can check out MorningStar makes a couple of really great Garden Burgers, Asian Style and SouthWestern style flavors (check their website for more info). Galaxy Nutritional Foods makes Veggie Cheeses, Light Life - Smart Deli Products make some good veggie-roast Turkey slices and more.

If you want more recipes, or have more specific questions and concerns, you can email me at tubmanxpress@yahoo.com. I AM a wholistic health facilitator and a live foods chef.

Hope it helps.

That was great advice. I think I will also try those suggestions. My sugar cravings never go away though so I think I'm just wasting time and energy trying to fight it because it always comes back. But I definitely recommend YERBA MATE TEA. It has been called green tea on steroids because of it's antioxidant powers. It boost your energy and fights hunger pangs. I might start to add cinnamon to mine to see if it curtails the sweet tooth. And also, I plan to revisit something my mother used to do for us and that is making fruit smoothies. Your kids will surely love those.

Bro, J,

Also consider cooking your brown rice in broth. I use yard bird broth but you may want to use vegetable broth. lol Or use a boullion cube in the water to add flavor.

Dear Brother,

You are on the right track by reaching out to others, try doing that within your family members, friends, or neighbors you feel you can trust, or social services, if you are the main caregiver, their are programs that will help you.

As far as you diet goes, just don't bring anything you are trying to stop eating home, and for god's sake don't give them fast food.

Pray for Divine guidance, and don't try to stop every thing at once, stop one bad food at a time, i stopped the swine, then the beef then the fish, now with the help of The Universe i'm working on diary, i've minimize the process foods, this summer i'm striving for a raw diet..........

Be sure to make up a daily menu, and a daily schedule of bed time, etc. involve the kids, and let them know the importance of what you are trying to do, include them in everything at this age they want to help, also stop in an ask a good private day care/school for advice on daily activities for the children.

Good luck

If your eating habits are to become a spiritual one, then it would be automatic to eat right. Eating right has to be a part of your subconscious mind. Over a period of time your subconscious would be made conscious through repetition.Sub means second in rank or below, like subtract, submarine, and submerge. What you've been doing is saying "I won't eat this. I won't eat that, instead of "I will eat this. I will eat that." Instead of focusing on what you should not eat, only focus on what you should eat. Then those thing you shouldn't eat would be removed subconsciously until eating right is made conscious. Think of one food that you use to eat. You don't eat it anymore. Go ahead name one. You didn't consciously say I'm not going to eat that anymore. You ate so many of the good foods that subconsciously you stopped eating what actually isn't food at all. Over a period of time those bad choices that you deleted subconciously became a part of your conscious, and you are no longer a prisoner to those choices.
For now eat salads all day long when hungry. Don't think about the bad choices only the good ones. Here are the choices I want you to repeat on a conscious level until it becomes a part of your subconscious. If it's not on this list don't eat it. If someone on LIB has a better choice list follow that. Here goes:

RAW/ORGANIC FOODS

Tossed salad ( spinach, romaine, tomato, mushrooms, etc.)
Olive oil dressing
Water all day
Walk all day ( walk rather than drive when possible)
Natural exercise - house work, yard work, wash car
Dance
Cayenne pepper, Kyolic (aged garlic extract), multi vitamin
Fruit blend - Banana's, strawberries, favorite juices
Plenty of rest

You don't see meat, dairy(milk, cheese), eggs( embryo),dairy salad dressing etc. So you don't eat those items. As I mentioned earlier once your list of good foods are established stick to it.

After the weight is lost then you need to know what to do to stay at the same weight, but for now lets work on getting the weight off. I'd like to say that it takes a big man to seek help when needed. You have my respect.

note: Instead of croutons I sprinkle Raisin Bran on my salad. Whether that's a good choice or not I don't know. Let's hear what our other Afrikan sisters and brothers have to say.

Forward...

Thank you brother. I appreciate this. You and brother JC and others have all given me excellent suggestions. I'm actually thinking about doing an online log/diary type thing to monitor my progress. Kind of like the "Super Size" me guy did for that McDonalds diet he had.

First thing IMO is to get 7-8 hours of sleep at night!

Maybe if you change Your diet first, your children will see what you do and the transition will be a little easier for them, at least when they're with you. I've heard that exercising gives people more energy too.

If you have health insurance, get tests done to see if you are deficient in any vitamin, especially B vitamins and iron. Vitamins will only work If you are deficient in one of them. And then, if you have weight to loose, that should help too.

Good luck with that.

Hi Jason!
Ill tell you what worked for me, and be gentle with yourself. You are rebuilding and retraining a body which was previously running with the heavy use of stimulants. Sounds to me like you need more B12 in your actual diet, along with the previous suggestions for exercise etc. Your nervous system is so used to getting a boost from caffeine, and high fructose, you are going to have to be very patient in weaning yourself off.
First things first - only drink filtered water from now on as heavy metals in your water can affect your nerves and make you feel extremely fatiqued, you will notice the difference quite soon.
I also recommend, Hemp Seed milk. Buy some organic hemp seeds, take around a handful and soak in some filtered water, the next day blitz them hard in a blender with around half a litre of filtered water. Strain into a cup, forcing it through with a spoon. and drink immediately. (use the remaining seed husk to fertilize soil) Take this morning and night, the fats in hemp seed are very good for repairing nerves overstimulated by drugs including caffeine - very good for your kids, add a banana to make it less boring for them!!
Hemp seed oil is expensive, but 2 tablespoons a day either straight, or on (cold) food is good, Extra Virgin olive oil is good also.
My final suggestion, as a last meal in the evening (not too late!) try a porridge made of medium oatmeal and add two heaped tablespoons of wheatgerm AFTER the oatmeal is cooked. This is so you don't destroy the B12 and E vitamins. This should make your sleep more satisfying so not so tired during the day.
When you relax into this routine, contact me for info on crystals you can use to continue the healing process on your system, and manage your energy.

Kind regards, and dont give up!
Sharron
