Living In Black

Bringing You 360 Degrees of the Black Experience

I have been listening to Sobonfu Some, she is a wonderful sister from the Dagara people of Burkino Faso. Well, she has a made a book on C.D.'s called " Women's Wisdom from the Heart of Africa", a must have for sisters. In these talks she discuss the wisdom of the Dagara People, but most importantly the pivotal role of women in their society. HOwever, family one thing rang true for myself and many others that have listen to this masterpiece. We African women in the Diaspora all too often lack the much needed support of our mothers, sisters, cousins and elders. So, I ask you is her concept of women' circles/societies outdated in our context or a missing link to the puzzle of African women's life and logevity in the Diaspora?

A friend gave me Sister Some's CD set for Christmas several years ago. Interestingly, I happened upon it last week and decided to revisit it. So it's what's playing in my CD player these days, along with Rev. Michael B. Beckwith. No, sister circles are not outdated. I see women weaving these circles, albeit often informally, with some regularity. Without my circle of sisters I would be lost. I can honestly say my present state of mental and emotional health, which I think is quite good, is due in part to the dynamic, awesome women that love, challenge, and support me.

I have to agree that the concept of women circles is not outdated and its desperately needed for us as women. When I think about it, we kind of do this when we form a group of friends or we have certain female cousins or sisters that we like to talk and spend time with.

As I think about more of my own personal experience, my A'nie was the most influential woman in my life growing up, followed by my Mom, other aunts, and my grandmother. I learned much from our talks and from watching them handle life as I grew into adulthood (even when I may not have always listened).

I'm thankful to have had the women in my family who were near or already of Elder status growing up because I know this is not always the case. I find that even now, I normally seek older women or women who share similar experiences to share with and learn from as they have been where I am and are already where I am going.

Of course, Sistah, absolutely! For example, there are things that my friends daughters discuss with females, myself included that they just would not discuss with others, men specifically. They appreciate a circle of womanhood to feel secured and nurtured, where they can discuss issues affecting us that only we as females can fully appreciate. I am sure brothers would say the same -relatively.

All though this is for Sistah primarily.....

I've a mother, 2 aunts, 3 sisters, several nieces, and a daughter...
Hopefully if in turmoil I can help.....just a Brotha reaching out...

it's called "For the Sistahs"...Basically in a time where Sistahs(The planet's first people), historically have posed most of the solutions to progress us as a people. It would be nice to see Brothas help be the vanguards we could to help build and provide the necessary infrastructure, money, support, etc..to allieviate any obstacles to your solutions...hopefully for the circle...

Y'all do your thing....(as you do quite well), I'll(as many Brothas I'm sure) will be waiting outside the door for instruction....

Beloved Queen Goddess Nickesha:

We are in Crucial, Critical, and Critiquing times now which is a Turmoil by not us being Divinely in Unity with each other now. The Willie Lynch mentality is still alive, and that is a mental Turmoil. Where there is no Harmony, Order, & Balance among a people, there is confusion, and confusion is Turmoil. Are we in Harmony Order, and Balance with all of our people?

I know about the Turmoil that is ahead, that eyes haven't seen and ears haven't heard, if we do not unite NOW.

Precious, Nickesha, what Turmoil are you speaking about?

Until we have a thirst and hunger to gather together at a Divine Spiritual Retreat Survival Schooling, Turmoils like we never witness before we will face. Until we are back in our Own environment, the environment where we are Divinely in Charge, we will continue to experience all types of turmoils.

Divine Loving
