Danny Glover Faces Racism in Making Movie about Toussaint L'Ouverture

Danny Glover is making an epic film about Haitian independence hero Toussaint L'Ouverture. Glover is directing. Filming starts next year in Venezuela. The cast includes Don Cheadle, Mos Def, Wesley Snipes and Angela Bassett.

Needless to say, Glover ran into resistance in raising money for the film. Producers from Hollywood to Europe wanted to know one thing:

"Where are the white heroes?"

In other words, a movie about a Black revolutionary hero who overcomes European/white imperialism is not a viable or marketable movie unless there's a white hero smack dab in the middle of the story.

The bottom line: "No white heroes, no money."

Glover perservered, however. He has raised 18 of the 30 million dollar budget from Venezuelans. Glover is a friend and supporter of President Hugo Chavez.

Hollywood/white resistance to financing a film of this nature comes as no surprise. I'm glad Glover ventured outside the Hollywood establishment and raised the money.

Lessons for us:

1. We can accomplish ANYTHING we set our mind and will to do.

2. We don't have to depend on whites/Europeans or indifferent Negroes for the fulfillment of our goals/dreams.
