Living In Black

Bringing You 360 Degrees of the Black Experience

I have a request. Is it appropiate for grown, conscious, pan afrikans to be hanging out to two and three in the morning at a party? I'm just curious. I am to the conclusion and I've heard many elders say that not much happening that late at night but booty calls and trouble. Is it still true? Bottom line if we are at war how much socializing i.e. chit chatting/hanging, chilling after hours "when we are supposed to be sleeping are we supposed to do". How many dead hours do we have to be chilling? How much time do we just have to just let it all lose? It just seems like there are too many so called "Conscious" folk spending too much time Conscious partying and letting their hair down i.e. blond hair or now blonde locks. When are some of us going to grow up? Should married persons or persons with children be in the house at decent times i.e. 10 or 11 Oclock. Unless you are doing some serious work most activities can be handled within this time. Unless some serious Nation Building Dailogue not just listening to music. Somewhere along the long some very, very unconscious behavior, attitudes, behaviors, morals have creeped into the "Conscious Community". If persons spend as much time on these behaviors as we did towards studying then we'd be alot better off. This is why many persons brains do not operate appropiately. This is why many persons are not reading. I have one message for those in the Conscious Community GROW UP Brothers and Sista's. We are at War! Too much partying and not enough work and research is being done.

I agree with you.

I heard a person say: Party goers do not achieve anything.

I know there is no time for lying, shucking, jiving, bumping, grinding, smoking, drinking, doping, hoping, having fun in hell.

In times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act. George Orwell

The eye of the Revolutionary is always on Freedom, Independence and the Sovereignty of Life for Black People, without Class being a factor in our Life. (Osiris)

Hotep, Haki Ammi. This seems to be about reconsideration: Something that was excepted and popular before is no longer appropriate at this time. This is about collective determination and discipline. It's about an agreement between "conscious minds" to decide that this late hour time must be allocated for the needed work, and make the necessary changes to improve our present plight: In other words, party time is over for some of us. The implementation of serious "Nation Building Dialog" has to be put into place just like many of us are putting our finances into place; by eliminating unnecessary spending. The withdrawal of social activities, in this vain, will only be eliminated when it's considered as a set-back to the process, by the collective so-called "conscious minds, as well as "non-conscious ones. But who will implement this?

Great words Bro. Haki!!! I strongly agree.

Serious minded people working to accomplish worthwhile goals should not be "hanging out" EVER, especially at night.

When one LIVES with purpose, that purpose will determine how they utilize their resources. Meaning that one will utilize those resources in a way that is conducive to accomplishing purpose related goals. Time is one such resource. People who are serious minded and live with purpose find more constructive ways to use their nighttime hours than partying and butt shaking. Show me a person who is CONSTANTLY partying and socializing, and I'll show you a person who doesn't have much going on.

If one is out at night, it should be ONLY for constructive ideas such as working, networking, or strategizing to accomplish worthy endeavors. Too much of what goes on at night speaks to the lower nature of people. Morals tend to be very loose or non-existent during the nighttime hours. Thats why at night more crimes are commited, more booty calls take place, alcoholic consumption goes up, and some people generally act in ways that they wouldn't during the daytime hours.

Now, having said all of this, we must acknowledge the fact that as humans we are social and relational beings. As such there is a human need to interact and connect with people. To that end, I am for HEALTHY and RIGHTEOUS ways of people coming together. Not the clubbing, partying, and butt shaking. I mean ways of socializing and entertainment that speak to ones HIGHER self. I remember when I was living in L.A., there used to be a health food store called "The Good Life" that used to have Friday evening gatherings where various authors and conscious folk would come and discuss health/diet, African history, business opportunities, and Nation Builidng ideas. This is an example of something constructive.

In short, ones activities is determined by one's thinking. Elevate the thinking, and boht the time use and activity one engages in will be elevated.

After considering the words of the good Sister Teek, I'm going to amend the above just a little bit.

After some thought, I don't see anything wrong with having social gatherings; i.e. people coming together for the purpose of connecting and mingling. After all, we are social beings. I DO THINK though that the theme, setting, and environment for the gathering should be HEALTHY; something that doesn't speak to the lower nature of folks. "Conscious" folks are social beings too.

What I'm mostly against is the every weekend clubbing, partying, butt shaking, getting tipsy type vibe that is so prevalent with a lot of folks. Or as Public Enemy said it, "partying and bullshit."

I still think though that serious and purposeful people are mostly found using their time for constructive reasons. But even these folks need time to socialize.

Peace, Love, and Blessings,

LovingLife, everday!!!

Does that include family gatherings? I think its fair to say that many of us don't have family that are of the same mindset and wouldn't agree with this sentiment but we love them still. Would you guys still not go to a party/ gathering involving family because you believed it to be "unconscious"?
To that end though many of these conscious events become a night out for some of our people. There's a hell of a lot of talking going on but very little action taken and so they become avenues for some of the conscious heads to mingle, not do any meaningful work, just mingle.

Greetings Sis. Teek,

Thank you for your words.

Sister you always say something that makes me think; that's why I vibe off of you so well. Because of what you wrote, I'm going to amend what I said above just a little bit.

Aaaww bless, I'm honoured that you value my words. I agree with you about the people who are partying every weekend aren't really looking to be mindful of our situation any time soon but as brothers Kimathi and Kamau-Mau said everything has to have balance. I've met the bredrins and sistrens who believe that consciousness = overly righteousness, which = never being able to relax or let loose even among family. They are not happy people to look at or be around they are oppressive and staunch and i don't see how they can be thinking progressively with such a stiff mindset.
Don't get it twisted we're African and i know very few Africans who don't enjoy brukin out once in a while. What we have and are experiencing is a bastardisation of a sacred practice. That practice was dance, every African nation and culture has they're own ceremonial dances but what has happened to us as diasporians has seen this practice demonised and sexualised. Something that was once sacred to us has now turned into a form of cavorting on the dance floor. Its a shame, but if we are really serious about reclaiming our history and culture then we need to understand these things and reclaim them too.

Ok I definitely have more to say especially after reading other posts. Someone mentioned family gatherings. I agree because before my father transitioned he partied and was dancing into his 70's until his cancer got worse. He would actually party with my sisters. I say that to say if your parents/family can not party with you, without feeling embarrassed, insulted or ashamed of the lyrics that they are hearing or what they are seeing while partying then you might want to question how affirming the music is to your own psyche. It is a different time now as well.Because of my father being from Guyana I grew up with Calypso and Soca music where the elders and children still party together together till today. So it is not uncommon to go to a calypso /soca party or even some times a reggae party (a roots party more than likely) and seeing a 60 year old couple showing the youngsters how it should be done on the dance floor. Yet at this same party you would have a group of men usually engaged in some intellectual conversation as to why OUR people should choose this person or method for empowerment.
I experienced a great similarity from my mother's side of the family who were from down South who would be doing the hustle and the rock with the children at the birthday parities while another group of folk were talking about what OUR people need to do.
My point is that partying was a lot more wholistic then and was more communal where different segments of the community could commune, relax, be safe, be affirmed and be empowered.

People know right from wrong and they make their choices. I'm of the notion of keeping your life balanced with as little hypocrisy as possible, but if we gotta get up in the morning, you better be up and ready to move or get left behind. My dad broke me of that in high school and the only time I was out late was my senior prom.
